The city of Koper wants to become an international Water Polo centre

Numerous activities, that are connected with Water Polo, are planned in the city of Koper for the year 2019. The team of  Water polo association (VD) Koper Primorska, composed by a lot of students of the University of Primorska, will continue with the competition in the international A2 Adriatic League. The Slovene Water Polo Leauge will also start soon and our waterpolo players are the first candidates for the title, after they recently won the Cup of Slovenia.

At the end of March the new Olympic swimming pool in Koper wil host the Group B of the Qualification Tournament for the Men’s European U-15 Water Polo Championships. In July the local water polo club will be a crucial partner of the  University sport association of Primorska for the first European Universities Championship in Water Polo, which will be hold at the summer swimming pool in Žusterna between the 21st and 27th July.

» I would emphasise our activities that are connected with the students and with  the  European Universities Championship. However, our intention is that Koper will soon become the centre of Slovene Water Polo and also an internationally important Water Polo centre,« explained mr. Blaž Čeklić, who is the assistant of the rector of the University of Primorska and at the same time the sportive director of VD Koper Primorska.

The most important step in that direction will happen right before the July EUC, when  Koper will host a high quality international camp for water-polo players. It  will not be the classical summer camp for children, but a tight and serious professional cooperation with one of the giants of global Water Polo – Partisan Belgrade. Agreements with the president of the VK Partizan Beograd, a former excellent goalkeeper Aleksander Šoštar, and with the mayor of New Belgrade, also a former world top water-polo player, Aleksander Šapić, have been already done.

“We want to establish one of the best Water Polo summer camps in the world. Now there are only mini-camps and a few larger, but the focus there is on having fun, so they are usually organized near to water parks. The Koper camp will be a serious learning and training specialized camp. We will do it together with Partizan Beograd and Aleksander Šapić, who was one of from the best attackers in the history of this sport. He is planning his comeback in the Water Polo world right for this occasion,” added Čeklić.

And a common sport equipment store, that will connect the University of Primorska, the Water polo association Koper Primorska and the basketball club Sixt Primorska, is also planned to be open this year at the Student’s centre Koper place.
